Air France KLM Cargo - Premium solutions for complex logistics

Over the past four years, Air France KLM Cargo has made important investments in its facilities, processes and human resources dedicated to pharma, not only in Europe, but also around the world. Among its top priorities as an organisation is a commitment to a deep understanding of the highly regulated, complex world of pharma logistics.

The cargo branch of the company has been investing in facilities at Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol airports, where its two major shipping hubs are located. It has also recently launched a push for improvements in its Cairo, New York and Chicago hubs. Since being granted IATA CEIV Pharma Certifications for its cargo hubs and long-haul flights, the company has been laser-focused on maintaining the top-level quality that customers and regulators expect with external and internal audits.

Air France KLM Cargo aims to renew its certifications in 2019, but in order to understand the needs of the market, it also places high importance on participating in major conferences and events. The aim is to listen to its customers and give feedback on the current state of pharma logistics for the overall benefit of the industry.

Premium solutions

The company's product portfolio offers the market a global range of solutions to meet customers' needs. The premium product is Closed Cool Chain Solutions, which safeguards cold chain integrity down to the most specific requirements for the transportation of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Along with the company's packaging partners, it offers rental arrangements with a large choice of container types. For shipments that demand the strictest temperature control, solutions include active units featuring dry-ice cooling or electrical heating systems, or passive containers built with phase change materials. A dedicated sales team can advise customers on the best fit for their individual products.

Controlled Cool Chain Solutions is another core product for the company and is based on its collaborative approach to customers' trade lanes. Working with pharma logistics chain experts, Air France KLM Cargo aims to explain and define the main risks and limitations that customers may encounter when shipping items using their own packaging.

At main stages such as trucking, air transport and warehousing, these cold chain solutions ensure that a shipment is transported and stored within defined temperature ranges - from 2-8°C, 15-25°C or 2-25°C. These two main solutions are driven by special handling codes through the entire air transportation process, allowing the cargo handler to adhere to the product specifications that the company sells.

Next steps

In September, Air France KLM Cargo welcomed Enrica Calonghi as its new global head of pharmaceutical logistics. Calonghi is a native of Italy, where she graduated with a degree in languages and foreign literature. She is well-known within Air France KLM Cargo, where she has spent her entire career.

After working for KLM Cargo in Italy, she moved with her family to Spain, where she led the cargo division from 2011 to 2014. For the past three years, she worked at the company's headquarters as a key account director before accepting this new challenge. Together with her management team, which is composed of Philippe van-Meir and Fabrice Panza, Calonghi has already started work on the next steps for the pharmaceutical division.

"We are a customer-centric organisation, complementing the sales and service actions in every country," says Calonghi. "We steer commercial activities, and initiate contacts with shippers and forwarders to promote pharma products and solutions. We engage in marketing exposure and will take the next step in digitising our pharma products."

Defining her new role, Calonghi says, "We are the voice of the customers. Therefore, we analyse needs and study industry dynamics, and we translate them to our operational domain to ensure that Air France KLM Cargo's product proposition and performance are up to market requirements and customers' expectations. We look forward to seeing your pharmaceutical logistics on board our flights."
