Gerresheimer’s innovative glass for the pharma industry - Gerresheimer’s innovative glass for the pharma industry

Gerresheimer is a leading global partner for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, manufacturing special glass and plastic products that contribute to health and well-being. The company has announced that it will bring a new syringe safety solution to the market after coming to a licensing agreement with West Pharmaceutical Services. Gerresheimer says it will also increase supply of an innovative medical glass product created by Corning. The product, Corning Valor Glass, offers greater resistance to damage, reduces contamination and enables smoother line operation.

Portfolio products

Gerresheimer will complete its product portfolio of prefillable syringes made of glass and plastics with an innovative, integrated and passive syringe safety solution that has been acquired through an exclusive licence from West Pharmaceutical Services.

"As a result of our long-standing partnership with the leading manufacturer of packaging components and delivery devices for parenteral drugs, we are pleased to have acquired the rights to market this innovative syringe safety solution developed by West," says Jens Kürten for Gerresheimer. "By doing so, we will complement our very broad range of prefillable syringe solutions for biotech and other drugs."

Gerresheimer is a long-standing leader in the industry. They've been a terrific collaboration partner, and we're excited to be working with them.

Syringe protection

Gerresheimer is a leading supplier of prefillable glass and plastics syringes. The new safety solution is fully compatible with Gerresheimer's current and well-established ready-to-fill (RTF) syringe portfolio. The solution is fully integrated and will be assembled on the syringe in the run of the RTF production process. It is compliant with standard nests and tubs, which enables the pharmaceutical company to use the standard filling process.

The high incidence of needlestick-related injuries among healthcare workers has led to increasing demand for innovative safety solutions. International regulation has paved the way for more safety for healthcare workers and patients. The new Gerresheimer integrated safety syringe will address this market need by offering improved syringe processability and high-end user friendliness. West will maintain its current safety solution portfolio of products, which are already commercially available.

Glass delivery

Gerresheimer and Corning have also announced that the two companies will work to increase the supply of Corning Valor glass to the pharmaceutical industry. Valor is a breakthrough glass container engineered for the storage and delivery of 21st-century injectable drugs. It is described as an unprecedented improvement in glass container quality, with superior strength, chemical durability and damage resistance resulting in better protection for drug products. Valor Glass also enables increased throughput and higher levels of quality assurance for pharmaceutical companies, and higher-quality medicines for patients. Valor Glass eliminates delamination and dramatically reduces the probability of cracks, breaks and the possibility of contamination by glass particles, allowing lines to run smoothly and at higher speeds.

Corning collaboration

Corning and Gerresheimer have been working together since 2015 to accelerate Corning's suite of innovations for the pharmaceutical glass packaging market. "We are thrilled to be working with Corning on innovations to enhance quality across the industry. Valor Glass is a remarkable glass with outstanding performance on every attribute," says Kürten.

Ron Verkleeren, vice-president and general manager of Corning Pharmaceutical Technologies, says Gerresheimer is a long-standing leader in the industry. "They've been a terrific collaboration partner, and we're excited to be working with them to bring Valor Glass to the pharmaceutical industry," he says.
