The outsourcer’s resource

As pharmaceutical outsourcing companies increase in number and by location, the International Contract Service Expo (ICSE) puts them all under the microscope in one place - visit ICSE Europe 2007.

Just a short time ago, outsourcing within the pharmaceutical industry was peripheral to the main manufacturing process, confined to clinical trials and a few final steps before product delivery.
Globalisation, demand for more sophisticated drugs, the emergence of new economies and updated legislation have changed all this. The question today is not whether or not, but how much, to outsource your pharmaceutical manufacturing process.

This meteoric shift in business practice has brought with it many advantages: cost savings, faster time to market, the ability to draw upon the experience of others, a rise in the demand for biotechnology-based drugs with their complex, costly and labour intensive procedures has further heightened demand. All these factors have driven exponential growth in the number of organisations around the world offering contract services for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Yet how can you effectively compare products and services from companies as far afield as Poland or India?

The simplest answer is to make sure you schedule a visit to ICSE. The event will take place at the Fiera Milano Rho in Milan, Italy from 2-4 October 2007.

ICSE is seven years old and from fairly modest beginnings it is now a major event with a sizeable presence – second only to CPhI Worldwide, the market-leading fine chemicals and pharmaceutical ingredients exhibition. Together with the Pharmaceutical Machinery and Equipment Convention (P-MEC), this tripartite of events has attracts an audience in excess of 22,000 pharmaceutical professionals. Visitor numbers to ICSE alone doubled year-on-year in 2006.

On site in 2007 there will be a wide range of products and services, and the companies that supply them, to choose from. To help you navigate your way around more than 250 exhibiting companies from 30 different countries, the organisers have designated three special zones.

The Biotech Zone focuses on the entire biotechnology category, including the specifics of diagnostics, protein chemistry, therapeutics, platform technologies, toxicology/virology, bioelectronics, bioinformatics, process validation, analytical chemistry, immunology, cell biology and medicinal chemistry. Confirmed exhibitors include: Amega Biotech, BAG BiologischeAnalysensystem GmbH, Blausiegel Ind E Com Ltd, Covance, Laboratorio Pablo Cassará Srl, Miltenyi Biotec GmbH, M-Scan Ltd, NDA Analytics, Newlab Bioquality AG, Quality Assistance SA, Safisis, Varda Biotech Ltd and Weimer Pharma GmbH.

The Clinical Trials Zone features companies that specialise in phased clinical trials and research. This includes organisations that offer complete phase one through four trials or any part thereof, pre-testing or testing within specific fields.  Confirmed exhibitors include: Anapharm, BioSkin GmbH, Bombay BioResearch Centre, Fisher Clinical Services, ILS Ltd, Maipal Acunova Ltd, R5 Pharmaceuticals and Swiss BioAnalytics.

Technology providers come under the spotlight in 2007 for the first time in the IT Zone. This area of ICSE recognises the huge contribution of technology within the pharmaceutical industry. Customised hardware and bespoke software for document and data management, compliance systems, RFID, supply chain management and warehouse management are now an essential part of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process.

ICSE isn’t just about procurement, though. Its ability to bring the entire outsourcing sector together at a single venue makes it an ideal forum for networking, education and celebration of innovation and expertise.

Throughout the event the Showcases will give you free access to a carefully selected programme of exhibitor seminars. On 2-3 October the programme will cover a wide range of topics, with the final day’s presentations wholly focused on clinical trials.

It’s a good opportunity to catch up on innovations from companies you are already familiar with, as well as fact-finding about potential new partners in advance of approaching them direct.

Another unique feature of the event is the European Outsourcing Awards.  Endorsed by ICSE, these awards recognise and celebrate excellence in R&D, marketing, business and technology across the entire pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical outsourcing industries.

If outsourcing all or part of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and procedures is now a major feature of your procurement decisions and you want to ensure you have access to the widest choice of potential suppliers, a visit to ICSE 2007 is a must.
