A fresh approach helps when the heat is on
Pharmaceutical products require specific conditions when in transit in order to maintain their freshness and quality. Air Canada’s revamped cool chain solution enables it to keep vaccines and other temperature-sensitive shipments at the required temperature throughout their journey.
Some commodities by their very nature require special handling. Items such as precious valuables may require additional security while others, such as vaccines, need stable environmental conditions to maintain their freshness and quality. Air Canada understands the importance of maintaining the integrity of temperature-sensitive shipments not only because of the normally high commercial value of the shipment, but also because such shipments have an effect on communities around the world.
Years of R&D are at risk if these shipments are not handled in the most efficient manner and protected from varying ambient temperatures.

Cool chain
With temperature variances between the cargo
facility, tarmac, cargo hold and destination station,
how can the required temperature be maintained?
Air Canada’s revamped cool chain solution
enables it to keep vaccines and other time and
temperature-sensitive shipments at the required
temperature for the full duration of their journey.
Shipments are placed in large containers using
either dry ice or electrical-based temperature-control
technologies (used for heating and cooling) and
travel in this unit from origin to destination.
Air Canada’s specially trained station attendants monitor the containers’ internal temperatures by noting the display values of the readers, which are conveniently situated outside the units’ doors, and temperatures can be adjusted as needed. High value shipments can be transported in active containers with AC Absolute. Its features include:
- precise temperature control (-20°C to +20°C)
- expedited tarmac times
- temperature monitoring.
Air Canada’s AC Pharmacair is ideal for sensitive healthcare commodities that are pre-packaged to maintain the desired product temperature. Its features include:
- temperature maintained in desired range (refrigerated and ambient holding areas)
- expedited tarmac times
- temperature monitoring.

Air Canada was the first airline in North America to be certified by Transport Canada for the transportation of the Envirotainer RKN e1 container in 2009. The firm has since become an industry leader in the transportation of time and temperature-sensitive shipments. In early October 2010, a leading pharmaceutical company that supplies vaccines globally awarded Air Canada Cargo in recognition of the success of its cool chain process. The award followed an
impressive 60 consecutive months without a single product loss due to temperature variance – the industry average is 25% product loss during transportation.
