Kemira - Salt of the earth

Kemira is the world's largest producer of salts of acetic acid. Backed by almost 50 years of global experience, supported by our strong technical know-how and extensive R&D facilities, Kemira offers an unrivalled number of high quality product solutions, all of which meet or exceed international quality standards.

Continuous improvement, and the constant desire to find better, more efficient, more competitive, and more environmentally sustainable ways of doing things, are the driving forces behind Kemira products. Through dedicated research and with the cooperation of our customers, we strive to create new product solutions and to make those we already have, even better.

Our experience and know-how would count for little were it not for the input of our customers. Learning by listening is a critical factor in the development of effective Kemira solutions provided for industrial processes around the world.

Kemira offers the world's most extensive selection of acetate salts. Our acetates are produced in a multi-purpose facility dedicated to the production of organic salts. A simple but effective production process, whereby alkalines are reacted with an organic acid, makes it possible to produce a solution that can be spray-dried or crystallized. Spray-dried products are available in either an agglomerate or powder form.

Customer focused

Kemira has developed the agglomerate grade to fulfill customer requirements, offering a low-dust product that dissolves well. Our agglomerate has a high bulk density and is free flowing. The powder grade can be easily blended with other fine textured ingredients to produce a more uniform and integrated mixture. Customer needs and preferences can therefore be met and with all Kemira organic salts products, high quality, proven performance is assured.

Our production facility is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified and the company adheres to an extensive HSE system, which underscores Kemira's commitment to Health, Safety and the Environment.

Pharmaceutical mindset

Kemira is the acetate producer with a pharmaceutical mindset. Our products for the pharmaceutical industry are used around the world in the production of insulin, antibiotics, dialysis solutions, enzymes, and vitamins.

Many of our acetates, mainly sodium acetate but also ammonium acetate, potassium acetate and zinc acetate, are used in the production of insulin. Furthermore, acetates play an important role as a buffer regulating the pH level in dialysis solution.

Kemira's calcium acetate, which is FDA listed, is an active pharmaceutical ingredient in phosphate binders, which are used to reduce the absorption of phosphate into the human body.

Kemira's R&D facilities are constantly developing new and innovative solutions for pharmaceutical purposes. There is a strong focus on quality control and product excellence and all of our products for the pharmaceutical industry conform to USP and European Pharmacopoeia.

Formic acid

Formic acid is one of Kemira's main products. With over 20 years of dedicated research and development into practical applications based on formic acid, Kemira has acquired extensive know-how in this field. As a result, we are able to offer innovative products, ideas, solutions and expertise on formic acid-based applications to a wide range of industries, including the pharmaceutical industry which is one of Kemira's key global customer segments.

Formic acid is an entirely natural and environmentally benign acid that was first discovered in the red ant (formica rufa), from which it takes its name. It is also found in plants such as the common stinging nettle.

Within the pharmaceutical industry, formic acid can be used as a reagent and pH-controlling agent in various processes. It is used in the production of a number of pharmaceutical ingredients, such as insulin, antibiotics, vitamins, caffeine and enzymes.
