Biological infectious waste treatment system in vaccine production

Nowadays it is a critical point in vaccine production to assure their excellence in good manufacturing practice (GMP), including handling the biohazardous waste generated at site.

Celitron, with its experience in treatment of biological infectious waste, offers custom-designed, unique and integrated solutions for vaccine producers to treat immediately their infectious plastic cell culture roller bottles, while at the same time minimising the risk of cross-contamination, and reducing the time and effort involved in waste handling − without the need for a separate storage area.

Our integrated system provides a reliable, user-friendly and cost-effective solution, including direct connection to the clean room(s) where the waste is generated, automatic loading and compacting, sterilization and shredding in a single vessel with the Integrated sterilizer and shredder (ISS), and automatic unloading.

The system is easy to use; the operator can start the treatment process and control it from the clean room. The contaminated roller bottles are automatically transferred through the loading system to the compactor, which reduces the volume of the waste.

The compacted waste is automatically loaded to the heart of the system, the ISS, a steam sterilizer with an integrated shredder designed for on-site conversion of biohazardous waste.

After the treatment, the waste is sterile, rendered, fragmented, non-toxic, largely solid and can be disposed as would regular municipal waste. The treated plastic roller bottles are automatically unloaded into a standard waste container, and as the outcome is granulated plastic, it represents an environmentally sound opportunity for recycling options.

Infectious medical waste treatment in hospitals, clinics and dialysis centres

Celitron’s compact medical hazardous waste solution, the ISS, is a steam sterilizer with an integrated shredder, designed for on-site conversion of biohazard waste in hospitals, clinics and dialysis centres, and complies with EU and WHO recommendations.

The stainless steel vessel is fitted with a motor-driven shaft, with powerful shredding/crushing blades that can rotate in two directions to reduce the size and volume of the waste down to 20%. The blades are mounted on the shaft and are designed to shred waste such as sharps, dialyzers, syringes, papers, cloth, plastic and glass. Shredding is important as it enhances the steam penetration therefore improves the overall sterilization results.

The steam is internally produced by a steam generator, supplied by a water purification and draining system as a standard accessory. The vessel is constructed with internal sprinklers for automatic cleaning.

The entire process is automatic, including the opening and closing of the door, turning and rotating of the vessel, and the sequences of shredding and sterilization.

After treatment in the ISS, the waste is sterile. The liquid components of the waste are steamed out of the vessel, re-condensed and drained to a municipal sewer. The waste is rendered, fragmented, non-toxic, largely solid and dry and therefore safe to be disposed in the same manner as regular municipal waste.
